Best Short Walks: Gorges Sant Jaume

This walk is perfect for hot summer days – it all runs in the shade along a refreshing river that gave the name to a fascinating small canyon: Saint-Jaume, or, in local Occitan, Sant Jaume. Park your car or bike at the small pilgrim church of Notre-Dame de Laval, located 2 km au sud-east of Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, on the D9. Follow the department road to the entrance of the walk, located a couple of yards up the road left to the bridge crossing the river. Lush foliage will embrace you, providing shade in summer. The path is quite small, but mainly even and very easy to walk and follow. It will take about 45 minutes…

Best Short Walks: Sentier de Roubials

In Maury, the Sentier d’interprétation botanique de Roubials provides a wonderful way to discover the surrounding garrigue, learn about the origins of the Fenouillèdes, and to enjoy great view across the Agly valley and to the eroded Karst mountains of the Corbières and the Cathare castle of Quéribus topping one of the cliffs. Family-Friendly „Sentier“ The circuit takes roughly two hours. You can park your car at the Maison du Terroir and add a litte tour of the winegrower’s village famous also for its murals (37 kms) or start at the aire du picnique (rest area) along the D19 on the right hand side after a small bridge. Even though it…

Best Short Walks: Sentier des Hauts de Taïchac

Saint-Martin-de-Fenouillet is one of those agricultural villages that is typical of my region: lost in the middle of vineyards, surrounding by a beautiful, and yet very diverse landscape: chalky cliffs, bold granite, wide heathland, sudden gorges, undulating hills and magnificent views of the holy Catalan peak, the Pic du Canigou. The kaleidoscope of landscapes is rooted in the area’s geology: here, the African shelf hits the European shelf. Sentier des Hauts de Taïchac: follow the yellow signs In front of the Auberge Taïchac, the village’s sole and only place to eat and sleep (sorry, only during the season, i.e. Easter to October, local fare and 33 beds), you will find direction and a maps…

Printemps des Échoppes 2015

On Ascension Day 2015, Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet celebrated its 23rd festival Printemps des Échoppes. Even though the weather changed from sunny to windy and wet, everybody enjoyed the festivities, with the town’s 22 associations contributing to the day’s varied programme. For all interested in local culture and cuisine, the annual ´Printemps des Échoppes“ is a great way to discover the region, with local artisans and producers inviting to discover and taste their produce, and bands playing popular tunes. The dance group, however, recalled the wild West of the U.S. with line dancing in style. Also on the agenda were guided tours of the town’s landmark – the Chapître, including a visit of…
